How to Pick the Right Dog Training Collar

With the wide variety of dog training collars on the market today, it’s important to choose the one that suits your pet’s personality and needs.
By comparing the different types of training collars available and what they are best used for, you’ll guarantee a pleasant training experience for both you and your dog.
Dog Head Collars
Often mistaken for a muzzle, a dog head collar is actually a collar that goes around the dog’s neck, combined with a loose loop that goes around the nose. This type of collar works beautifully on dogs who have the tendency to pull, as its design makes it almost impossible for the dog to move too far ahead of the handler. It also give the handler excellent control.
Dog Harnesses
Dog Harnesses are another great option for heavy pullers. The harness wraps around the shoulder and ribcage of the dog, and eliminates potential damage to the neck and throat area.
Chain Slip Dog Collars
Sometimes called “choke chains,” slip collars are potentially dangerous and should only be used by someone who knows how. By pulling and then releasing, the trainer makes a quick and pointed correction to the dog’s behavior. To eliminate the possibility of choking, strangling, or other injury, slip collars should never be worn when a dog is tied out, in a crate, or unattended.
Pronged Dog Collars
If your dog is stubborn and willful, he—and you!—may benefit from a pronged dog training collar. These collars feature dull prongs on the inside of the collar. Because injury is possible, pronged collars should only be used as a last resort after every other type of collar has been tried, and then only by someone who is experienced.
Electronic Dog Collars
Also called “shock collars,” electronic collars emit an electrical stimulation designed to eliminate bad behaviors. While the shock in and of itself is not dangerous, electronic collars should only be used by experienced trainers. While the electrical stimulation can’t cause injury or harm, if used incorrectly it can accidentally teach the dog the wrong thing.
A good dog training collar can turn a trainer’s experience with his dog from battle to bliss! Just make sure you do your research and pick that collar that suits the needs of you and your dog.
