Is an Akita Right for You?

Akita Puppy and Dog Information

by Mitch Endick

Akita dogThe Akita is a powerful, alert, large dog with a heavy build that can remind you of a bear. She does not need a tremendous amount of exercise and may even be suitable for an apartment if one is willing to enjoy daily vigorous walks with her. A properly fenced yard for exercise is preferable.

She is good with the kids in her adopted family but she may not take to your kids friends, which scares me when you consider her size and potential for harm.

She does not do well with other pets and is determined to be the top dog. She has no problem getting into a serious blood and guts dog fight. She must always be walked on a non retractable leash. As a general rule, never leave any young child alone with a dog for any period of time, no matter how short.

Sometimes the Akita is also associated with the name Inu which means dog in Japanese. The American Kennel Club lumps both the Japanese Akita and The American Akita together but many other countries consider them separate breeds.

The Japanese version comes in four colors, Sesame, Red Fawn, White and Brindle. The American also comes in the Pinto color. The American type is larger and has shorter fur and more colors.

* Temperament. The Akita has devotion, alertness, dignity, large size, is fearless and was bred to be a watch dog. It can be very aloof with strangers and needs good socialization.

* Approximate Adult Size. The male stands about 26 to 28 inches tall at the withers (highest point of the shoulders) and the female stands 24 to 26 inches at the withers. The weight varies to around 75 to 115 pounds, the males slightly heavier.

* Special Health Considerations. The major health concern is hypothyroid disease (sluggish thyroid gland which can result in weight gain) which affects a high percentage of the breed and can be treated with hormone replacement drugs. Symptoms of this disease include itching, lethargy, sudden aggressiveness, and odd odor.

There are also less common disorders such as hip problems, some blood disorders and degenerative myelopathy. Kidney disease can affect older dogs. Akitas require high quality meat and bone meal food, not grain based food.

* Grooming. This breed sheds twice a year. It has a short haired stiff coat that needs frequent brushing. Bathing should be infrequent as it removes the oils from the coat that waterproofs the dog. Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease.

Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease. To avoid health problems, her toenails may need to be examined weekly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

* Life Span. The Akita lives to around 10 to 14 years with proper nutrition and excellent care.

* History. The Akita comes from the mountains of northern Japan and is considered an old native dog breed. Early on she was only owned by the elite, the Shoguns. This dog was bred to guard, herd, fight and hunt.

The animals it hunted were large game including boar, antelope, elk and bear. The Japanese government has designated this dog as a national treasure in 1931. The American Kennel Club approved this breed on December 12, 1972.

* Training. The Akita is smart and will learn quickly. They need firm training. He can become bored very easily to vary the training routine enough to keep him interested. It is a very good idea to have him obedience trained. He is currently employed in guard and police work in Japan.

* SPECIAL GOOD POINTS Very good watchdog. Very affectionate and courageous. They are not barkers unless there is a good reason. They can have a calming influence in a house. Very easy to housebreak. Keep themselves very clean.

* SPECIAL BAD POINTS Aggressive to other dogs. Can be willful. Can be aggressive about his food. May not accept children from outside his family. Easily bored, they need to be stimulated.

i have 3 children 12 13 8 is akita female ok cause my sister has one her akita male got along and played with children just them 3 outside

My neighbor has 4 dogs like this one all together and we constantly hear them fighting and we’ve heard from different people that these type of dogs are vicious and will kill if given the chance and stupidly we took it lightly. Then a full grown male akita like the one shown above, not sure if its japanese or american got out of its yard due to the carelessness of its drunkin owner went into the yard while we were sleeping and awoke us with the screams of my asso llaso and when my mother went outside by herself the dog that I’ve grown to love was murdered viciously by a black and white bear looking dog. This made my mother scream and me to come running outside bearfoot in fear of something hurting my mom. When my dogs fight we just wet them with a water hose and they stop.So that was my first thought and I went to my backyard to find my mother on top of her truck telling me frantically to spray the fight between the akita and my second dog. But this dog was so used to getting sprayed by its owner that by now this had no effect on its actions. At this time my sister had woke my father who was on his way down the stairs to see what the commotion was about and left the door open this letting my third and last dog out the door. As I watched in horror my dog being snapped and tossed around like a rag doll before my very eyes my third and oldest dog came to fight the akita as well my dog didn’t have a chance first of all it was completely overpowered, only had one eye from a previous fight with a pitbull and other various injuries. Although the neighbor came to get her dog that even she couldn’t control gave my dog a chance to get away with slight lacerations. My dad grabbed the dog and put it on the truck with my mother and I. The dog was put back in its house. Leaving us with the remains a hard fought dog that was just mauled another that was trying to get away and was tossed like a rag doll and had a snapped neck and a dog that was surely in critical condition. We called the authorities but all the could do was report it since it killed three dogs and no humans were involved even though it could have easily gotten my mother or me. The next morning the oldest dog was dead. I feel theres nothing else to do but inform people. This time it was three dogs next time it could be a five year old child playing outside.

We have 2 female akitas and they’re wonderful. Very sweet and gentle giants. We got them from a reputable breeder and raised them from when they were puppies. They were brought up in a loving household and therefore are sweet girls. They do not show any aggression and actually lick and greet the FedEx and UPS guys every time they come by. I think it depends on how you raise them. If you can’t be a responsible owner, don’t get an akita, or any dog for that matter.

Thank you for your comments and feedback.

I have owned Akita’s all of my life and they are a wonderful breed!!! It is all about how you raise and discipline the dog! Positive reinforcement is key! It is also important to read and research the breed of dog that you are interested in, that way you get the best match for your lifestyle. Akita’s for example, need lots of exercise, a job or duty to perform and most importantly a strong pack leader! They are honestly not like any other breed! They are attentive, loving, affectionate, smart and so very special! But they are only for experienced owners! I know that I will never own any other type of dog!!
For all of you people who say they are “vicious and will kill if given the chance”…I hate to break it to you…it is the owner!!! A “bad owner” could turn any toy day into a killer!!! it is all about the owner and the discipline! My advice would be to watch the dog whisper!

I have grown up with Akitas, and I have to say the ONLY time we had a bad experience with these dogs was one we adopted from a home where she had been abused. The kids used to pull on her tail, so naturally, she hated children. She was fine with me, but my friends were another story. We eventually had to put her dow because she was a bit vicious (bit my mother) and it was all because of her previous owner. The next two we had (we’re with our third Akita now) were both gentle, wonderful, loyal, and loving dogs. But take to heart that they do not play well with other animals! I always say that I love Akitas and will have them to the day I die, but I would not reccomend them for anyone who has not already owned one or a dog of similar temperment. They are wonderful dogs though.

I agree with my fellow Akita owners: to have a good, obedient Akita (or any breed, for that matter), the owner needs to take responsibility and train him (or her). We have a male who just turned 2, and he is wonderful! We have a Belgian Sheepdog who is 5 now, and they are inseparable. They get along great, and I think part of that is due to the fact that we brought him home as a puppy, so he learned the house hierarchy early. I love Akitas…they really are obedient, loving, loyal dogs. However, they are a lot of work if you’ve never owned a dog before. But, once you own one, Akitas are all you will ever want.

Nicolas, I am very sorry about your loss. I am sure it was very traumatic and I can understand if you are wary of Akitas. Obviously your neighbor was very irresponsible with his dogs. He probably did not sociallize them properly, did not train them and obviously did not have them properly confined. I had an akita for 8 years and she never once injured another dog. In fact her best friend and playmate was our miniature poodle. She was gentle with him and certainly never attacked a person. She was amazingly patient with my 2 year old nephew even when he snuck in the occasional whack with a chew toy. As others have pointed out, Akitas are usually very sweet and incredibly loyal. Please note that few if any dogs are inherently vicious and it is not possible to generalize across breeds. Dogs that do attack people and/or domestic animals have not been raised by responsible owners.

I have two akitas and they are the best dogs ever. I had an akita growing up who is now 10 years old and she is a wonderful dog. My two akitas get along with my cat and my two young brothers. The dogs actually rub noses with the cat and share their bones, toys, food and water. Akitas are wonderful dogs but need to around everything when puppies and need training. Once you own an akita that is the only breed you will want.

I purchased an akita almost a year ago. Kodi is the sweetest dog I have ever been around. He is a registered therapy dog and even helped a girl who had been attacked by akitas to feel comfortable around them. I also have a chihuahua; now they are mean dogs.

I have two wonderful Akita’s…my “puppies” are 11 & 11 1/2 yrs old (Angel & Bailey). I’ve had them since 6 & 10 weeks old, I wouldn’t own another breed, and yes, they can be aggressive towards other animals. Given the proper socialization and training and most importantly love and affection, these dogs will bring you such joy & unconditional love. I hate to hear that any animal is abused or mistreated.

Akita’s are nothing shy of incredible! The unfortunate circumstances descriped earlier are 100% the owner, and under any conditions should be accountable for it’s animals actions. Akita’s require a strong ‘pack’ in the family, without it they will always via for the Alpha position. They require constant guidance (as any child would) and always should be handled and socialized with care, respect (for other animals) and have a Human companion who is Alpha in the family. With these conditions, there is no other breed who can match the level of intellegance, devotion and love Akita’s return. There’s no other dog I would own. I am currently on my second Akita. His name is Conner and he’s 7 months old.

I have a Akita bitch who is now 14 I saw her at 4 weeks and took her home at 8 weeks she is my best friend very loyal, kind and loving. She is very dominate over other strange bitches but I now have a Puppy Dandie Dinmont and she loves her and our two cats and they all get on very well. We have been attack by other dogs who have been off the lead and their owners have not been able to call them so my akita has to defend her self and she usally wins. They are a bear in sheeps clothing and moult hair twice ayear the house will get covered if you can handle a dominant dog and lots of dog hair they could be the dog for you. You need to be firm but kind. My akita will leave a paw print on my heart for ever and when she leaves me and is gone I will never forget my best friend

First of all, no matter what breed of dog it is, they all have the potential for harm. Its the careless or neglective owners who give the various breeds bad names. Personally, I have 2 akitas and 3 pitbulls.. lightest of which is 70lbs and the heaviest being my male akita at 156lbs. I could not be happier with my selection of dogs.. I also have a 3 year old 30lb daughter, who is dwarfed by the shear size of all my dogs.. Not once has any of pets so much as gave my daughter a mean look. akitas are very protective over anyone who is inside my house. when my pits get a lil rowdy, my akita male steps in and stops the horseplay till they get outside where it is acceptable for them to play tthis way./ My daughter offen goes out with the dogs when they play and have never hurt her. The most harm done is if the dogs aren’t payin attention and bump my daughter to the ground while makin their laps around the yard….. Akitas are loving, protective, brave, and goofy thats their nature

When I was walking my two dogs, Sky, an Akita who was a puppy according to the black girl (he was much larger than my two dogs) at first sniffed Anna, my female Sheltie and Terry, my male Sheltie and then Sky sniffed Anna again and without warning, Sky had pinned down Anna and viciously attacked her. I took the chance of something happening to by by grabbing Sky in the backside area nearest the neck and head and pulled him off of Anna. Sky also attacked Terry and I pulled Sky off of Terry, and Sky pursued and attacked Anna again and I pulled Sky off of Anna again, which is when the girl (she was crying during and after the vicious attack) finally got up enough courage to put the collar and leash on Sky. I was very lucky that I wasn’t attacked, as well, which was due to that Sky was too focused on viciously attacking my defenseless dogs on April 1, 2007. On Halloween 2008, Sky got out of his yard and ran up to and viciously attacked a female Lab. when she was being walked by her female owner. My two Shelties and the Lab did not provoke the very aggresive and very vicious Akita, whatsoever. This does prove, since Akitas are bred to attack and hunt are a very dangerous breed of dog to have. I would never get an Akita because I would not trust an Akita regardless of how throughly trained it was, etc.
