Is a Pomeranian Right for You?

Why The Pomeranian Is A Fluff To Be Reckoned With

by Richard Cussons

PomeranianThe Pomeranian is a small fluff ball that looks like a miniature lion. His double coat that can be colored orange, red, brown, cream, white, blue or black, and his small erect ears, are his most distinctive features. Although his coat is beautiful, it does shed plenty of fur and will require daily grooming to keep it free from mats and knots.

Pomeranians first became popular in England in the late 19th century thanks to Queen Victoria who took a great liking to the breed. However, Poms were actually developed from sled dogs in the once Prussian region of Pomerania, where the breed received their name.

The Pomeranian is full of energy and is incredibly clever. He loves to learn and work which makes him an easy dog to train. In fact, his supreme intelligence has also made the Pom a frequent show dog champion.

One of his greatest joys is barking, which has made him an ideal watchdog. Unfortunately, Poms like to yap on a regular basis, which can become annoying. For this reason, many owners take great care to teach their dog’s when it is acceptable to bark.

Poms are very proud and courageous. Even though they love to be with their owners, they are very independent. Their independent, bold and often willful nature is why the Pomeranian requires obedience training. He must know that his owner is in charge or the Pom will take charge and attempt to boss his family around. Like many of the Toy breeds, Pomeranians seem oblivious to their size.

Pomeranians can be a very temperamental breed and only accept other family pets if they have been raised with them as a puppy. Poms will not tolerate teasing and are much happier with older children than they are with younger kids. Furthermore, younger children may handle the Pomeranian roughly and unintentionally hurt the dog.

Keep in mind, the Pomeranian is a very small Toy dog weighing only 3 - 7 pounds and at its highest stands only at 11 inches. Thus, it is more fragile than larger dog breeds, and it won’t hesitate to defend itself if it feels threatened.

Due to the fact that Poms are so small, they make ideal apartment dogs and are perfect city companions. They are exceptionally active indoors and only require short walks. This also makes them an excellent companion for seniors.

On average, a Pomeranian is a healthy dog and will live anywhere from 12 - 16 years. They are not prone to any major health defects, but the common issues that seem to affect this breed include early tooth loss, eye infections and skin and heart problems.

A Pomeranian is a fantastic and devoted companion. He travels well and likes to keep busy. His love is unconditional and he will return it ten fold to anyone who shares their love with him.

OMG I LOVE THEM THERE SO CUTE

I have a 2 year old that I bought when he was 8 weeks old, they are the BIGGEST pain in the ass to potty train, and even now, he likes to piss on the carpet out of spite. Oh, and eats his own poop. Other than that, they’re great dogs!

i really want 1 but im not sure where to get 1 from there so cute!!!

I really want one but I don’t know where to go. Please help!

We’ve had one for 4 years and he is an awesome dog. And no problem to potty train.

We have a 5 year old Pom and she is very loveable and loyal and beautiful, but she does bark her fool head off. Be prepared for this if you get one.

So how do you train it not to bark.My neighbours are sure to object 1

please consider getting a dog at your local spca. there are sometimes poms there and they all want to be loved.

Easy, you just look at them sternly and say no. Do it a few times. It worked for mine.

My Pom will bark while I play the piano. But it really is singing

I’ve had my pomeranian for about 5 years now. It really took her about 4-5 months to FULLY potty train. The only time that my dog, Chelsea, ever barks, is when she senses somebody in the shadows (like late at night) and she can’t tell what/who it is. The only other time she barks is if there are people walking by, and they won’t give her attention…but then, it sounds like shes crying and yelping.

In all honesty, the only problem I have with her is that shes sometimes TOOOOO friendly.. pomeranians are VERY intelligent dogs, and even though she was our first dog, she was definitely smart enough to train quickly! It just requires plenty of attention, patience and discipline. By the time she was 2 months old, she already knew how to SIT, LAY DOWN and COME.

pomeraniansss ruleeee

I just got my 3rd pom 4 weeks ago. She is now 10 weeks old, and is potty trained, (well except for a few accidents we agreed to forget). She already sits, dances, walks on her hind legs, sits up pretty. She is very sociable, loves other dogs and kids. She only barks when she wants to play. KEY with a pom, is to observe the puppy before you buy. They have many different personalities. But with all 3, I found them eager to please, highly intelligent, and the best companions I could ever have asked for in my life. She learns very easily, and goes both on the potty pad when inside, and outside when she goes out to “be good girl” with the big dogs in the house (2 pugs and a chihuahua). I would never own any breed but poms. The others belong to a friend, and although poms are high maintenaince, they are worth it. Be sure to brush each day, start from the beginning getting used to nail clipping (which can be done with people clippers), trimming around their little bottoms, and bathing and blow drying. They adjust easy and quickly become a major part of the family. But they DO require a lot of time initially!!!

I know of a Pomeranian who may be going up for adoption and I’m thinking of taking the guy in. However, I live in a VERY small efficiency apartment and while I’m reading that they make great apartment dogs, I worry over just how much space would be enough. Any input on how the do in small spaces is appreciated! Thanks!

I AM PROUD TO SAY I AM THE OWNER OF FOUR POMMIES. THE MOMMA COOKIE AND HER THREE DAUGHTERS, LADY, MITZI AND OF COURSE MARILYN. I COMPLETELY AGREE THEY ARE EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT AND FULL OF LOVE. I COULD NEVER PART WITH ANY OF THEM.

I might be getting one today, I’m not sure though. I live with my boyfriend and we or rather his mom has a Lhasa Apso and a Boston Terrier.

My brother just bought a Pomeranian. She is 5 months old, and is a whitish color. She is very smart, playful, and loving. I don’t know much about Pomeranians, but I’d still recommend getting one, because there small cute dogs.

I can not agree with you in 100% regarding some thoughts, but you got good point of view…

i just got a pom a few days ago. shes sooooo cute, however shes so little right now its hard to tell when shes going to pee she takes off running and by the time you take a step to grab her she tinkles its soo quick hahah its like th width of 3 pennies put together, but i love her so much..she’ll be some work!!

T_T, lol, how do you convince your parents to get a pommie? T_T they just keep saying i’ll get distracted and i won’t work(as in school work.)

I’ve just got a pomeranian puppy of 9 weeks old. So chubby, OMG! Luv him soo much. Btw his name is Genji and his hobby is to bite clothing or anything that is biteable, including his water bottle… wow…

He still hasn’t learned any commands nor potty. He’s still less than a week old, after all in my house. In anyway I’m jealous of Mr Foxy Bitey because he sleeps in my mom’s room …. complete with AC and TV! wow…

I have a year old PomMIE. She is so gorgeous! Her name’s Paris,+ she’s house and car trained. Jenny, ya parents should let ya get a pommie - they teach you great responsibility, and in the end you’ll be so proud of how you’ve trained it! Bsides, if u train it and look after it, there will be 0 stress for ur parents! POMMIES RULE!

Mine is a little DEVIL! haha… she tries to bight my feet when i am walking anyone have that? She also isnt potty trained. HElp PlEasE!?!?
-she is one year old (sense this may)

im going to get a pom-terrier mix tommorow.
hopefully i can read about the predicted personalities and combine them ahaha
but he is so sweet and im just hoping he is house trained. I’m adopting. I was so lucky to find a pomeranian even though it had terrier mix! PLEASE ADOPT. <——–

I have a pomy , he’s the cutest thing alive lol.. but i have a question .. he sheds a looot of hair, if i cut his hair, will it grow back like his current original fur? Can somebody please answer me..

Everytime I take my pom in to be groomed I have her shaved and each time her hair grows back just as fluffy and huge as before. She is red sable and her undercoat is very light, the first time I got her shaved I was so upset because I didn’t think I would ever see my gorgeous red head again but I did : )
