Characteristics of the Dachshund

Dachshund - The facts every owner of this dog breed should know

by Robert W. Benjamin

dauchund.jpgDachshund (pronounced DAK sund) originated in Germany, during the 18th and 19th centuries, to hunt badgers. In fact, Dachshund means, ‘badger dog’ in German.

Their unique size and shape made them the perfect hunting dog. Their small legs allowed them to burrow into the ground and their narrow bodies made it easy for them to capture prey.

There are three varieties of Dachshund, Standard, which reaches an average height of 14-18 inches and average weight of 20 pounds; Dwarf, with an average height up to 14 inches and weight of 9 pounds; and rabbit, reaching an average height of only 12 inches and weight up to 8 pounds. Dachshund coats also come in three varieties, shorthaired, wire-haired and longhaired.

The shorthaired and wire-haired Dachshunds require little care while the longhaired Dachshund does require more brushing. The coats come in a wide variety of colors as well. Bred for their fearlessness and boldness during the hunt, many Dachshunds display these characteristics.

Described as curious and mischievous, they are not always easy to train and can sometimes be stubborn. Due to this personality trait, they are not always the best family pet, and should be watched carefully when around young children. Dachshunds are better with older children who can understand how to approach dogs carefully.

Dachshunds are temperamental and can be easily irritable. They do fairly well with other pets, but have been known to be jealous. Dachshunds are very active dogs that have a lot of stamina and will chase prey for a surprisingly long period of time. They can be rash when chasing prey and therefore caution should be exercised if the Dachshund is allowed to run off leash. In spite of their high energy levels, Dachshunds do well in all living situations, as long as they are exercised at least once a day. Dachshunds are prone to health problems, due largely to their unique shape.

In spite of their high energy levels, they can easily become overweight, so it is important not to overfeed them. Dachshunds usually have the most trouble with their spinal column because of the length of the spinal column and the shortness of the rib cage. Obesity will worsen the problem, as it will create more strain on the back. Most Dachshunds should be discouraged from jumping and climbing stairs in order to lessen the risk of injury. Dachshunds are also prone to heart troubles, diabetes, and urinary tract diseases.

There is a website that has great information on Dachshunds and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

i love my dotsie!!!!

Mine is named Duffy, shes a sweetheart!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My doxie is so cute, she is precious and gets along great with lab

I want to purchase one but im not sure if its worth the moneyy. Are they a dog worth getting?

I love doxies! They are amazing; unlike any other dog. But, because of that, you should make sure they are right for you. They were bred for independence, not obedience. That gives them tons of personality and they most certainly have a mind of their own! They are loving, clever, fearless, and stubborn. As with any dog, you should research the breed. If you think they are right for you, then get one (or two!). “Once you own a dachshund you will never be without one, and once you are owned by one you will never be the same!”

If it is not a dachshund than it’s not a dog or rather as Picasso said refering to his doxie Lump, “He’s not a dog, he’s not a human, he’s something else.” That sort of sums it up, but you’ll never know till you have one! On another note, They are famous in countless cartoons througout history and elsewhere because they are sooooo humorous, smart and cute!!!!!!

I think dachunds are soooo cute! I have a HUGE dog and I am not really sure if I should get a dachund because I also have some rodents. I don’t know how the dachund will react, but my HUGE dog is afraid of them! :)

I have one named PennyLou, she is great. We have 2 pitbulls also and when they are all out together they will play for hours and they were not raised tohether. She has taken really well to all other animals and ahe has been very easy to house train.

I love my little dashchund. His name is Slinky and we have had him for almost 5 months. He has such a funny personality but can be a bit stubborn. He loves to run around outside but sometimes I get scared he may run toward the road so I keep him on the leash. He will actually talk to me, in his own doggy way. I think he believes he owns the house. He is sooo curious about everything. I would recommend a dashchund, they are def. worth it.

I always look forward to cuming hme 2 c my puppies.I have 2 doggies,Salami and Cherrie.I love them to death…..oh and they extrmely intelligent

I’ve got two Dackels (I’ll explain this later), a brother and sister that are now three years old. As a US military officer that has lived in Germany for many years, I acquired the pair via a specialized breeder in northern Bavaria. As they come from I suppose what might call the “native stock,” they are somewhat larger than most of their American cousins.

It is quite interesting to read some of these comments from the “German” perspective, as we Americans often fail to realize that the hunting instincts of the breed remain extremely relevant in Germany, where it continues to be viewed as one of the best possible choices for the traditional Jaeger (hunter). In addition to their purposeful geometry and fearless, independent nature, they are also extraordinarily-capable as scent trackers.

Of course, few Americans have any need for the dog in the hunting role, so the traits that are so essential to forest duties in Germany are more often viewed with simple amusement at home. As noted elsewhere, they attack bugs, chase bird, and are willing to bark at most everything that moves. On that note, if you aren’t willing to put up with a fairly vocal breed, then this may not be the right choice for you. Dackels have an unusually sonorous bark, and they tend to use it fairly often. This can be regulated with training, but may be a concern if the dog spends a great deal of time alone in an apartment, for example.

Dackels do extremely well in a family setting, and while I no longer have young children, they are lively and social with every member of the household. Their fierce intelligence and innate tendency to do as they please are far more entertaining than exasperating. Whether they are following you around the house, nagging you to play with them, or burrowing under the covers in bed (where, thankfully, their short legs make them good sleeping partners), these dogs have the power to win over the hardest heart.

Finally, I’ve used the term Dackel in lieu of Dachshund or “Doxie” throughout because the Germans do not (ever) use either of the terms with which we tend to be most familiar. Here, the breed is known as the Dackel or Teckel, and in fact, the official standard bearer for the breed in Germany is the Deutscher Teckelklub (http://www.dtk1888.de/).

Looking for a big dog in a little package? If so, you can probably end your search right here.

When you do the right thing, enjoy it! When you take positive actions, enjoy them. After all, they are leading you toward positive results. Pat yourself on the back. Truly enjoy the fact that you’re making positive progress, and the negative temptatio…

I remember my first time on this website. My friend and I were looking for something totally new, something we haven’t read or heard about. We were so tired of college, and didn’t have too much time to go out. And we found this site, and now we come ever day to read some cool information or to discuss something with other people. It’s interesting to hear different points of view!

It’s hard to imagine, how people have guts to write comments like that. I would never write anything like this, because I would have thought what other would think of me after that. I know that it doesn’t matter who you are in Internet, you can act however you want, but anyway I would remember that a man should act nice and polite, no matter if he is online or offline

My doxie is named Jewels. She is the best dog I have ever had. I also have a lab and she loves to play with him all the time. Jewels likes to watch my hamsters run around in their cage but is afraid of them when I let her see them. when she was younger she had back surgery but it went well and shes back to her stubborn self

I have been adpoted by two doxies! I moved in with my boyfriend, who owns them and they took to me. So much so that the male has proclaimed I am his person. He now barks at my boyfriend if we are cuddling!
