Saint Bernard Dog.jpgDogs are great rescuers. We all know that, but some of them are better at the job than others. What could be nobler than saving lives.

Barry, who lived and made history between 1800 and 1814, was one of the greatest rescue dogs the world has ever seen.

Barry was a Saint Bernard dog who earned worldwide fame for the brave rescue operations he carried out during his lifetime. His painting by Salvatore Rosa still hangs in a hospice in the Alps of Switzerland.

PomeranianThe Pomeranian is a small fluff ball that looks like a miniature lion. His double coat that can be colored orange, red, brown, cream, white, blue or black, and his small erect ears, are his most distinctive features. Although his coat is beautiful, it does shed plenty of fur and will require daily grooming to keep it free from mats and knots.

Pomeranians first became popular in England in the late 19th century thanks to Queen Victoria who took a great liking to the breed. However, Poms were actually developed from sled dogs in the once Prussian region of Pomerania, where the breed received their name.

Shih TzuThe Shih Tzu (pronounced “Sheet-sue”) has a lot of spunk and is a very alert and resilient dog.

Like all dogs in the Toy dog group, Shih Tzus have a lot of character and are courageous for their size.

Throughout history they were raised as pampered pooches in the Imperial Chinese Court. Bred in the forbidden city of Peking, the Shih Tzu didn’t leave China until the early 20th century when they first appeared in Britain. Today they are a popular breed worldwide.

Commonly referred to as a “Chi”, the Chihuahua is a native of Mexico and comes in different colors and two coat varieties: smooth hair and long haired.

The dogs which take their name from the island of Newfoundland appeal to dog lovers of all types. There are two established varieties, the black and the white and black. There are also bronze-coloured dogs, but they are rare.

The black variety of the Newfoundland is essentially black in colour; but this does not mean that there may be no other colour, for most black Newfoundlands have some white marks. In fact, a white marking on the chest is said to be typical of the true breed. Any white on the head or body would place the dog in the other than black variety.

Bichon Frise.jpgThe Bichon Frise (pronounced “Bee-Shone Freeze”) is a curly all-white dog with a puffball appearance and a very puffy head.

It has been around since the 1300’s, and throughout their history they have been popular among Italian sailors, the Italian and French royal courts, and eventually with French street performers. Their name “Bichon Frise” is in reference to their curly white coat.

This breeds diverse history of human companionship is proof of the Bichon Frise’s easy going temperament. These non-sporting dogs are independent, gallant, and full of energy.
